MADAM! ONE PHOTO PLEASE!

After lots of thinking and considerations (of course your comments where part of my thoughts!) I decided to leave 6 photos in this essay. The most important thing I took on account was that the expressions on the people must show two things: first you had to feel the precense of the photographer; then, you had to feel that they where proud of what was happening at that precise moment.

Después de mucho pensar y considerar (por supuesto que sus opiniones eran parte de las cosas a considerar!) decidí dejar 6 fotos en este ensayo. Lo más importante para mi era que las expresiones de los retratados deberían mostrar dos cosas: primero, debería sentirse la presencia de la fotógrafa; y segundo, deberían mostrar cierto grado de orgullo por lo que estaba pasando en ese momento.

INDIAN WEDDINGS

After crashing 4 weddings and obsessing about them, I realized that I had fallen into the trap of the Indian weddings.
In this culture there are a few moments in the life of an individual that are so important that it iw worth risking everything else. Well, weddings are on the top of that list.

Después de caer de paracaidísta en 4 bodas y de obsessionarme con ellas, me dí cuenta que había caído en la trampa de las bodas Indúes.
En esta cultura hay algunos momentos en la vida del individuo que son tan importantes como para sacrificar todo lo demás. Bueno, las bodas encabezan la lista.

Wedding Crashers

Yes... I have become an Indian Wedding Crasher! One of my main goals on this trip was to photograph an Indian wedding... I ask everybody around if they knew anybody getting married so I could attend the wedding, but had no luck. Then, a very nice Indian guy that I meet on the plane said that if I just happen to see a wedding I should walk in, ask permission to photograph and he was certain that they will let me in and that they will probably treat me better than the real guests, "the north Indian way" he said it was. Well, he was absolutely right. So far I have been to 4 weddings, but I still need to see the beginning of one, and photograph it off course! In this part, the groom arrives to the wedding hall, on a horse with music and special lights (sometimes even fireworks) and lots of people dancing around him. Here are some of my favorite pics so far!

Así es... Me he convertido en una paracaidista de bodas! Una de mis metas en India era fotografiar una boda... Le pregunte a mucha gente conocida si sabían de alguien que se fuera a casar, para poder asistir a la boda, pero no tuve suerte. Sin embargo, un joven Hindú muy amable que conocí en el avión me dijo que si yo veía una boda, debía simplemente entrar, pedir permiso para fotografiar y, él estaba seguro, me dejarían entrar y hasta me tratarían mejor que los verdaderos invitados, "la manera de ser de la India del Norte" me dijo él. Pues, estaba en lo correcto. Hasta el momento he asistido a 4 bodas, pero todavía necesito ver el principio de una, y fotografiarla por supuesto! En esta parte, el novio llega al salón de la ceremonia, montado en un caballo acompañado de música, luces especiales (aveces hasta juegos artificiales) y un motón de gente bailando a su alrededor. Aquí tienen algunas de mis fotos favoritas hasta ahora!

This photo was taken by my friend Karim last Thursday, we decided to take a walk at the Old Fort of Delhi. Of course, been late in the afternoon and a place where Indians pay $0.09 to get in, it was pack with locals and lots of them ask for their picture taken... Once more, they didn't even want to see it.
Esta foto fue tomada por mi amigo Karim el pasado Jueves en el Fuerte Viejo de Delhi. El lugar estaba lleno de Indues, porque era la tarde y los nacionales solo pagan $0.09 (50 colones para los ticos) para entrar. Por supuesto muchos de ellos pidieron q les tomara la foto, y una vez mas, nisiquiera pedian q les mostrara la foto.

Madam! One Photo Please!

I am walking on the streets of Delhi and every so often I would here somebody come and say "Madam! One photo please!"
Indian people are facinated by the cameras.
Some of them want to ask for money after the photo (they never get it from me because I never ask to take the photo in the first place...) some want to see themselves in the little screen of my camera, and some are just very happy to hear the "click" or see the flash go off, they don't even ask to see the photo, they just walk away.
So I have been taking this pictures, just because most of the time they are very persistent and they will fallow you on the streets until they get what they want... I don't do much for this pictures, I don't change the lens I have on the camera, I don't spend so much time composing and must of the time I just take one frame.
But now, I want to put together a little photo essay about it, AND I AM ASKING FOR YOU HELP TO DO THAT!
You will find 22 images below (of many many that I have under this situation). Choose your favorite 5 or less and post a comment to let me know.
As I keep getting them I will keep adding photos, and by the end of my trip, we shall have put together a photo essay with the best 10 pictures!

Cuando camino por las calles de Delhi, muy amenudo escucho alguien que dice "Madam! One photo please!" (Senora! Una foto por favor!)
Los indus estan facinados con las camaras.
Algunos quieren plata despues de tomar la foto (aunque no la consiguen conmigo porque yo nunca estuve interesada en tomar la foto en primer lugar) otros quieren verse en la pequena pantalla de mi camara, y otros simplemente estan super contentos con oir el "click" o ver el flash, ni siquiera quieren ver la foto.
Yo he estado tomando esas fotos principalmente porque muchos son tan persistentes q me siguen en la calle hasta conseguir lo que querian. No hago ningun esfuerzo mayor, no cambio el lente y no me tomo mucho tiempo componiendo demasiado y muchas veces solo tomo una foto.
Pero ahora, quiero hacer un pequeno ensayo fotografico con estas imagenes, Y NECESITO DE SU AYUDA PARA ARMARLO.
Abajo van a encontrar 22 images (de muchas q tengo en esta situacion). Elija sus 5 favoritas (o menos) y dejamelo saber en un comentario.

Old Delhi + Good Light + A Camera = Happy Monica

Saturday morning, my new friend Haran, an India photographer, took me to discover Old Delhi with early morning light and less people... The idea, to photograph the elections movement. By noon, I had just a few election pictures, but lots of nice stuff from this area. Here is some of it!

El sabado en la manana, mi nuevo amigo Haran, un photografo Indu, me llevo a descubrir Old Delhi con luz de manana y menos gente... La idea, fotografiar las elecciones. A medio dia, tenia pocas fotos de las elecciones, pero mucha otra cosa buena de esta zona. He aqui un poco!

ANTES Y DESPUES.... BEFORE AND AFTER....

As I was walking the little streets, I ran into a bunch of chiken in a case... and I thought, well, not much diferent that in CR, they live in little cages and see the world happend around them. What I didn't know is that the world that these fellows were watching at that point, was the last they will see... Less than an hour latter, I pass by the same place and realized that all the chicken I had photographed before were now ready for soup!

Mientras caminaba por las estrechas calles, me encontre con un grupo de gallinas... I pense, bueno, no es muy diferente de CR, viven en pequenas cajas y ven al mundo pasar desde ahi. Lo q nunca me imagine fue q el mundo q ellas veian en ese momento seria el ultimo q iban a ver... En menos de una hora, cuando volvi a pasar por el mismo lugar, las gallinas estaban listas para la sopa!

Cute? specially for god! Tierno? especialmente para dios!

El proximo 21 de diciembre se celebra en la comunidad musulmana el Eid-al-Adha. Esta celebracion conmemora cuando el profeta Abraham estaa dispuesto a sacrificar a su hijo Ismail balo la orden de dios. Entonces, la comunidad musulmana de nuestro dias lo q hace es sacrificar cabras, camellos y vacas. Entonces, les dejo concluir porque hay tantas cabras sueltas por todo Old Delhi...

Next december 21st, the muslim community celebrates Eid-al-Adna. On this celebration, they remember the day that Abraham was going to sacrifice his son Ismail under gods command. So, today's muslim community sacrifices on that day goats, camels and cows. That might explain why there is so many goats loose in Old Delhi...

Hard working men! Hombres trabajadores! Una de las cosas q me ha parecido demasiado interesante hasta ahora, es q los hombres realizan muchos de los trabajos q en nuestro pais son tradicionalemente femeninos: lavar, planchar, cocinar, limpiar, etc etc... Este es un puesto de aplanchado en Old Delhi... 5 caballeros y mucha ropa q planchar.

One thing that I find very interesting so far is that there is no fear in men for works that in our country are mostly seen as women work: they iron, wash cloths, cook, clean, etc etc... This is a place where people take their cloths to be ironed in Old Delhi.... 5 gentlemen and lots of cloths to be ironed.

Ya han pasado 10 días desde mi último post... ni cuénta me di... he estado ocupada tratando de organizar mi fotografía, con poco éxito debo decir, pero seguimos en la lucha...
It's been 10 days since my last post... sorry, didn't even realize it... but here I am!

Quiero agradecer la preocupación de todos... Mumbai está lejos de Delhi, y aquí las cosas parecen normal, pero igual estamos siendo tan precabidos como se puede... claro!
Thank you all for your concern, I am living in Delhi, so I am far from Mumbai, but don't worry, anyways I am been carefull.

This weekend will be interesting, the congress elections are happening, so I am expecting a lot of movement for that, I hope to get some good pictures related to it, we'll see what comes up. We were suppose to go on a school trip to Jaipur, but it seams it has been canceled for security reasons... I am not please with that, I have to say, but we'll see, maybe the trip will still happen.
So my next post will be either of Delhi on election time or Jaipur... I leave you with the suspense.
Este fin de semana será interesante. Hay dos posibilidades de photos, la primera es Jaipur, si el viaje de grupo organizado por el instituto sucede (supuestamente lo cancelaron por razones de seguridad, lo cual me tiene bien molesta!) o sino, fotos de las elecciones en Delhi, porque este fin de semana son las elecciones de congreso. Aún no sé cuál será la producción del finde, pero cualquiera q sea ese será mi futuro post... los dejo con el suspenso.

Piña! Lleve la Piña! Visitando Delhi. Sight seeing Delhi

I have been in Delhi, India, for two weeks now, and I have had the chance to visit some of the "must" places... here some photos tha I want to share with you.
One thing that has catched my attention is the fact that there are usually more hindus in the places than tourists. I would say 70-30 ratio. Maybe is the fact that they pay $0.25 to go in, and tourist pay $5... It is like beeing in Costa Rica!

Quiere? un pedacito de piña? Está dulce... recién cortadita... espero no le moleste el smog, el polvo, y las cosas que vuelan por ahí...
Ya con dos semanas por este lado del mundo, quiero mostrarles algunas de los lugares turísticos que he podido visitar...
Una de las cosas que más me ha llamado la atención es ver la cantidad de Indús que visitan los lugares. Yo diría q siempre es una proporción 70-30 Indús-extranjeros. Tal vez es porque los Indús pagan $0.25 para entrar y los extranjeros $5... Les parece familiar? Es como estar en mi tierra!

THE RED FORT or Lal Qila
This place is the largest monument in Old Delhi. It is know as the Red Fort because of the red stone that it was builted with. It was built by a Mughal emperator in 1638, it took 10 years to finish it.
It is like a fort, with 2Km of ramparts and only 2 doors. It has everything an emperator "needed:" private and public audiences, dome and archer marble places, private apartments, a mosque, elaborated gardens, etc etc.

JAMA MASJID:
Es la mezquita más grande de Delhi, está en la cima de una pequeña colina. Puede albergar hasta 25mil creyentes en momento de oración.
No tengo muchas fotos porque no dejan entrar cámaras.

SAFDARJAN'S TOMB:
The last of the Mughal garden tombs that exist in India. Safdarjan was the one of the last governors during the Mughal period. By the time he died the empire was a fraction of its glorious days.

LODI GARDENS:
Este es uno de los parques públicos de Delhi. Está lleno de monumentos medievales que stán en proceso de restauración. Es especialmente visitado por personas q quieren hacer deporte, por parejas y por familias.

LOTU'S TEMPLE:
O el Templo Baha'i. Es una increíble estructura en marmol que parece una flor de Loto de 27 pétalos. Este es un lugar de meditación para personas de todas las religiones. Dentro del templo no se pude hablar, no se puede tomar fotos, no se puede hacer nada que vaya a molestar a los creyentes. HUMAYUN'S TOMB:
This is Delhi's first Mughal mausoleum. It was built to house the remains of the second Mughal emperator, Humayun in the XVI century. The contruction was oversee by his first widow. She even camp in the sight to make sure everything was built to her desire. She is now buried next to her husband. It also became the bury of other prominent Mughal. It was also the refuge for the last emperator, before he was captured by the British in 1857.
In the second photo you can see my to travel companions, René el tico and Pong el de Laos.
The first picture is a small tomb that sits on the gardens of the monument.

QUTB MINAR COMPLEX:
Este es el primer monumento de la India Musulmana. Construida con piedra roja de arsenica, la torre de 72 m, Qutb Minar, tiene tallados que recitan partes del Koran. Era utilizada para hacer el llamado a la oración de los fieles musulmanes.
Se inició su construcción en 1202. Representa la victoria del dominio Musulmán en India que perduró hasta 1857. Su construcción inició bajo el comando de Qutb-ud-din Aibak, quién murió 4 años después de que ganara poder en India. La torre fue terminada por su sucesor. La parte superior (en marmol) fue restaurada en 1369.
Junto a la torre están las ruinas de la primera mozquita en la India (segunda foto). Esta mezquita fue construída con partes de 27 templos Indus y Jain. En cada una de las piezas tomadas de esos templos, las caras de los dioses fueron removidas.

Guru Nanak Jayanti

El pasado jueves asistí a una fiesta de cumpleaños muy interesante. Bueno, en este caso, el idioma inglés tiene un término más apropiado para la ocasión, fue una celebración del "Día de nacimiento."

El homenajeado, Guru Nanak; la celebración, su "Birthday" número 539.

Guru Nanak es el fundador de la religión Sikhs.

En una cultura dividida por las religiones y las castas, Guru Nanak, un poeta y filósofo nacido en un pueblo en lo que hoy es Pakistán, formó un culto llamado Sikh, que condensa creencias tanto Hindú y Musulmanas. En esta religión, se cree que Dios no es ni Hindú ni Musulmán, es Sat o la Verdad, y mira a las deidades de sus dos orígenes como simples nombres de un ser supremo. Los Sikhs basan su religión en la igualdad, la democracia y la conciencia social. Ellos no creen en la adoración de los ancestros, la astrología, la distinción por castas y la discriminación sexual.

Los Sikhs llaman a sus centros de reunión Gurudwara. No existen los sacerdotes o momentos específicos de reunión, y en lugar de tener rituales, fomentan en sus seguidores la meditación.

La tarde del jueves miles de seguidores, conocedores y curiosos (como mis compañeros y yo) nos reunimos en el Gurudwara llamado Bangla Sahib, el más importante en Delhi.

La celebración dura 3 días. Los dos primeros días hay cantos consecutivos de los himnos. El tercer día, el jayanti o Birthday, inicia con procesiones, cantos y despliegues de banderas. Yo, tristemente no vi nada de eso.

Sin embargo, si pude presenciar la esencia de la festividad: asistencia, meditación, oración, ofrendas, caridad y solidaridad.

Al llegar al Gurudwara lo primero que hicimos fue cubrir nuestras cabezas con pañuelos (bueno, algunos de nosotros lo hicieron con suéter, a más no haber) es uno de los requerimientos para poder ingresar al templo. Luego, quitarnos los zapatos y las medias. Al templo se entra descalzo, pero antes uno se debe lavar los pies.

Los zapatos, se preguntarán ustedes, los dejamos en una especie de locker.

La gente hacia fila para ingresar al Gurudwara, así hicimos nosotros.

Una vez adentro, nos dedicamos a caminar de un lado para otro, observando y por supuesto, fotografiando.

Fue muy interesante ver tantas expresiones de fe. Personas de todas las edades, grupos sociales y hasta religiones.

Una vez que salimos del Gurudwara nos encontramos con la comida. Uno de los elementos esenciales de esta festividad es el almuerzo colectivo. Miembros de la comunidad Sikhs cocinan durante todo el día para ofrecer un plato de comida, con un espíritu de servicio y devoción, a quien lo quieran, sin importar credo, sexo o edad.

Ya íbamos saliendo cuando nos topamos con una sorpresa. El templo tiene una gran "piscina" de aguas "sagradas" que normalmente se utiliza para la contemplación y la meditación, pero en este día, bañarse en ella es como tener una bendición. Entonces, nos encontramos con una gran cantidad de fieles chapuceando (los mas pequeños) o sumergiéndose en el agua.

Pero bueno, no más palabras, que las fotos hablan por si solas!

Last Thursday, I attended a very interesting birthday.

The birthday boy, Guru Nanak; the celebration, the conmemoration of his 539 birth – day.

In a culture divided by religion and the cast system, Guru Nanak, a poet and philosopher born in a town located in what today is Pakistan, started a cult named Sikh, based on both Hindu and Muslims believes.

This cult or religion believes that God is not Hindu or Muslim, it is the Sat or the truth. This religion looks at Muslim and Hindu deities as just different names for the same supreme power.

Sikhs base their believes in egalitarianism, democracy and social awareness. They condemned ancestors worship, astrology, cast distinction and sex discrimination.

Sikhs gather in a place called Gurudwara. There are no priests or specific time for meetings, and instead of rituals, they believe in meditation.

Thursday afternoon, thousands of followers and curious (like me and my friends) gather at the Gurudwara called Bangla Sahib, the must important one in Delhi.

The celebration starts 3 days before the jayanti or Birthday. The first two days there are continuous recitation at the Gurudwara. The third day starts with processions, singings and displays of the Sikh flag. I, sadly, did not see any of that.

But I did presence the essence of the celebration: participation, meditation, prayers, offerings, charity and solidarity.

Once we got to the Gurudwara the first thing we did was to cover our heads, a must if you want to go inside the temple.

Then, we took our shoes and socks of and leave them in some kind of locker service.

After washing our feet, we got in line to go inside the Gurudwara.

Once inside, we spend a good amount of time walking around, looking at everything and of course photographing.

There was a lot of faith inside, coming from people from all kinds of religions and social groups.

We finally went outside the Gurudwara and we found the food. An important part of this festivity is a collective lunch. Members of the Sikhs community cook all day to offer a plate of food for everybody, inspired on a spirit of service and devotion.

We were on our way out when we found a big surprise. The templo or Gurudwara has a big "pool" with some "sacred" water that is usually for meditation, but on this day, bathing on it is a blessing. So there was people splashing (the little ones) and bathing in the water.

La "vistada"

Hasta los ingredientes de cocina son coloridos en India.

Para explicar un poco la cosa, cada noche nos llevan al cuarto un termo, un plato, una cuchara, una bolsita con pepinos, una bolsa con pan y una servilleta. En el termo va nuestra comida por supuesto.

El equipo de la cocina... también limpian, abren la puerta a los clientes, atienden las llamadas de los cuartos, arreglan los calentadores... zoilas, puras zoilas.

Ya hace una semana q estoy en Nueva Delhi.

Pareciera mucho más. Ha sido una experiencia muy enriquecedora.

No solo tengo la oportunidad de conocer un país tan exuberante y diferente como la India, sino también tengo la oportunidad de compartir con personas de todos los continentes.

Una vez más vivo en carne propia la importancia de la tolerancia y el respeto. Qué diferente sería el mundo si todos aplicáramos más estos valores.

Ayer pase mi tarde fotografiando la cocina del Hotel. Un posible ensayo fotográfico. La idea original vino de saber que la cocina es en la azotea al aire libre, por lo tanto se pude ver la ciudad mientras cocinan… me pareció diferente y exuberante, y además, iba a mostrar un elemento esencial de mi viaje, la comida q me dan en el hotel 2 veces al día.

Por supuesto, ingenua Mónica, olvido que estoy en India, y que las normas de higiene se rigen por estándares totalmente diferentes a los de mi pequeño país, obsesionado con la salud pública, según nuestros compañeros centroamericanos.

Entonces, salen de nuevo con pancartas, tambores y trompetas, mi amigo respeto y mi amiga tolerancia. Y es que (como dirían en Telenoticias Canal 7) si me pongo a pensar, este es quizá uno de los lugares más higiénicos en los que voy a comer en este país, a menos que esté dispuesta a gastar todos mis viáticos semanales en una sola comida en alguno de los restaurantes finos de la ciudad y ayunar por la hambruna en el mundo el resto de mis tiempos de comida.

Yo, habiendo enfrentado ya situaciones bien desagradables (como ver y fotografiar a un buzo de Río Azul comerse un muffin de KFC recién salidito de la bolsa de basura de algún Food Court de algún Mall) tengo un estómago fuerte, tolerante podríamos decir. Pero mi pregunta es, amigos y amigas mías, ¿serán ustedes de estomago tolerante?

Me cuestiono entonces, siendo esta la segunda vez en mi vida que hago un trabajo fotográfico tan personal (porque al final, es mi estomago el q recibe esa comida dos veces al día) si valdrá la pena contar la historia. ¿Será que hay alguien, ahí afuera, que esté interesado? ¿Estarán ustedes interesados?

But, long story short. Would you have the stomach to see a "proper and clean" Indian kitchen on a photo essay? Knowing that I eat that food twice a day, and that "proper and clean" is measured with a different scale in India?

I have spent some time now in the kitchen of my hotel photographing… It would do an interesting photo essay, I though at the beginning… well, I am not sure anymore.

It is funny how much perspective change when things are personal.

Primer algunos de los animales que se pueden ver de la azotea del hotel (es decir, de la cocina): palomas, cuervos y monos… si, monos….

First some of the animals you can see from the rooftop of my hotel's (the kitchen): pigeons, crows and monkeys… yes monkeys… Luego, otra cocina, pero esta vez en la calle y donde yo no como (aunque si juzgáramos por la clientela encorbatada al medio día, debería probar).

Y nos fuimos para Nehru Place a buscar un adaptador para poder conectar los aparatos electrónicos. Tomamos el Auto-Rickshaw: 9 personas, 3 rickshaws, 25 minutos en tráfico y locura.
And then we took the Auto-Rickshaws to Nehru Place. We had to buy some electronics... 9 People, 3 Auto-Rickshaws, 25 minuts in traffic and crazyness.

Es muy extraño... todos los libros que he leído sobre India dice que uno no debe darle limosna a los niños, mujeres, hombres, ancianos, que piden en la calle... Si uno lo hace, dicen ellos, terminará con la persona pegada a uno pidiéndo aún mas, y muchos más vendrán después del primer@. Pero cómo hace uno para resistir el dolor y la angustia de ver algo como lo que muestra esta foto?
Yo seguí el consejo de los libros, pero me siento culpable... aunque tienen razón... son tantos, y yo no tengo suficiente.

Esta es quizás una de las experiencias más impresionantes de mi vida en los últimos años... todo inició hace más de un mes, cuando supe que este viaje era para mi, pero se materializó el pasado 2 de noviembre, cuando me monté en el avión al norte y luego al este....
Esta foto la tomé al atardecer de ese 2 de noviembre.
This is perhaps one of the most inpresive experiencies of my life... it all started a little over a month ago when I knew this trip was for me, but it materialize itself on November 2nd, when I took a plane to the north and then to the east...
